Liz Prescott’s latest collection at Portland Art Gallery continues her exploration of light, reflection, and atmosphere through richly layered acrylic paintings. Drawing inspiration from Maine’s rugged shoreline and the ever-changing waters of the Portland waterfront, Prescott captures the fluid boundary between realism and abstraction. Works like Drip, Still Evening, and Cascade pulse with movement and color, offering glimpses of familiar coastal motifs dissolving into dreamlike compositions. Her mastery of shape, space, and hue invites the viewer into a meditative dialogue with the natural world.
Prescott’s painterly process is deeply intuitive and informed by decades of studio practice. Each canvas builds gradually through layers—an echo of the tides and shifting weather she so carefully observes. With titles like Mingle, Favorite Place, and Points of Light, this show reveals an artist tuned into both visual nuance and emotional resonance. A graduate of MECA and VCFA, Prescott has exhibited widely and teaches plein air painting throughout coastal Maine, including Monhegan and the Schoodic Peninsula. Her paintings reside in prominent collections such as the Portland Museum of Art and Colby College, affirming her as a vital voice in contemporary New England landscape painting.
