Light, Landscape, and Memory: The Paintings of Jill Hoy
Jill Hoy’s newest exhibition celebrates the lyricism of Maine’s landscape, where shifting skies, coastal shores, and inland farms are rendered with her signature vibrancy. From Hillside of the Golden Apple to Cape Elizabeth Shore Fog and Two Lights Splash, Hoy’s brushwork captures both the drama and serenity of nature. Each painting evokes the immediacy of place—whether it’s the quiet calm of Lodge and Cattails at Ames Pond or the energetic spray of surf along Apple Island, October Dazzle. Her compositions weave together light, movement, and seasonal change, offering a deeply personal vision of Maine’s coastal and pastoral settings.
At once representational and expressive, Hoy’s work conveys both observation and emotion. In Mart’s Sunlight Porch and Three Vases and Peonies, domestic interiors open to the outdoors, bridging private space with the larger rhythms of nature. Pieces such as Mildred Heanssler’s Meadow, Queen Anne’s Lace, and Heart of Stonington honor the heritage of Maine’s farms, fields, and villages while reaffirming Hoy’s commitment to place and community. This exhibition highlights her ability to transform local vistas into universal meditations on beauty, belonging, and the enduring connection between land and memory.
