Maine. My strongest connection to Maine is my love of its variable and rugged seacoast. As a painting student, Winslow Homer’s seascapes helped to inform me about the mystery and the drama of Maine’s seacoast and the people who dwell there.
Inspiration. The play of light and shadow over the architecture and landscape and the moods they produce.
Medium. I have chosen to work with acrylic paints, as I prefer their fast-drying properties that lend themselves to my layered approach to painting.
Artist Hero. There are several: Claude Monet, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Morris Louis, and Bob Dylan. I’m inspired by their stories, their work, and, in some cases, their persistence over time.
Studio. My studio is situated in my home in north central Massachusetts, surrounded by hills, forests, streams, and ponds. I have two studio easels always in place and I typically have several pieces in progress at any given time. Outside my studio, the surrounding rural area and the coast of Maine offer opportunities for plein air painting.
Where in Maine. My wife and I spend much of our summers in Wells, Maine, where we enjoy walking the beach, hiking the numerous trails, and embarking on adventures along the coast between there and Bar Harbor.
Fun Fact. I am a pretty decent carpenter and, in fact, I am pretty handy at most of the trades.
Education. I first studied oil painting with Tom Morris at his studio in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. I later studied fine arts at Mount Wachusett Community College, and attended classes at Worcester Art Museum. That, along with time at the easel and studying paintings of the masters and contemporary painters, has contributed to my craft.
